Essie Mini How High

November 2, 2011

I don’t know about you, but I haven’t smelled a non-3Free polish in a long time. When I cracked open my new Essie Mini How High, a familiar odor seared my sinuses. I was inspired by kittytokaren’s awesome post comparing the color to donut frosting…

I spent a lot of time trying to decide if I like this color on me. We won’t talk about how many coats this is. I lost count. Thankfully it dried down beautifully despite looking thick as I piled on the coats. It wore like iron for the time I could stand wearing it. I think what I don’t like about it is the yellowed-pink color of my free edge. I have kind of resigned myself that my nails are always going to be a little stained but c’mon…

So I did a layering experiment. Here I have at least four coats over Essie Sand Tropez (index and ring) and Sinful Colors Snow Me White (middle and pinkie.)

I left Mini How High alone on my thumb so you can compare. I don’t like the Sand Tropez result, although I *would* wear that color. I just don’t want to layer to get it. (And I apologize for the topcoat smear on the index.)

Over white I can’t decide. I think it loses something. I can’t chop off all the white part of my nail without having stubby round fingertips protruding past my nail. Maybe I’ll just admire kittytokaren’s beautiful results. Any thoughts?

Sephora by OPI Caught with my Khakis Down

October 7, 2011

I recently saw SOPI Caught with my Khakis Down on one of my fabulously stylish friends. I begged to know what she was wearing and even though she told me what it was and promised to pick up a bottle for me, I couldn’t wait. I went right out and bought Essie Sew Psyched.

What’s wrong with that?

We met up again finally and she handed over my precious. Let’s see it:

This baby is a lovely sage green or khaki creme. Two coats went on extremely smoothly, though I would recommend throwing topcoat on there to hide my nail ridges. Also, you should always use topcoat if you aren’t going to change your polish for a couple of days.

SOPI CWMKD and Essie Sew Psyched are incredibly similar. Check out the bottles:

reaaaally similar

Pretty much the same color and they both have a tendency to separate unattractively. Don’t let that deter you from picking either of them up though, because:

Look how awesome they both are! I honestly don’t regret having both. The Essie has a very subtle shimmer that does not show up on camera, but it does turn the green ever so slightly more grey. Plus shimmer is fun when you’re in the mood for shimmer, and creme is great when you’re not!

These are a couple of colors I would call “on-trend” and “totally” work-appropriate. Go wild. :P

Sinful Colors Ruby Ruby

September 22, 2011

I don’t know what made me grab this one. It’s a nice red jelly, good coverage in two coats, but a little blue-pinker than my usual pick.

Isn’t it weird with the changing light? It’s hard to know when to take pictures. Now I don’t mind the VNL here, but I know some people would. Sometimes a photo exaggerates the VNL but this is accurate.

I thought I would show you a comparison with some other reddish hues so I hastily threw them on:

Shown are two coats of everything. The index has Orly Haute Red, one of my favorite medium reds. As you can see, it’s much more opaque. Middle and pinkie are Ruby Ruby and my ring finger shows Essie Clambake. It’s definitely an orange and at two coats, the VNL screams! Haha.

It looks like the hard drive recovery is no-go, so my laptop is officially dead with no ability to Resurrect. I will try to update as often as possible despite this setback!
